Maggots as slimming aid

Warning : don’t read further if you’re eating now.

Yesterday a friend forwarded me an email about an anthropologist named Susan McKinley who returned from a South American expedition to notice a very strange rash on her breast caused by larvae which were feeding off the fat, tissue, and even milk canals of her bosom. The email then exhorted readers to wash their newly purchased undergarments before wearing them so as not to have the same fate befall them.

The message also came with picture of a breast with merry maggots peeping out of holes. It reminded me a lotus seed pod like this one. I don’t want to paste the breast photo here, it’s truly gross but just imagine a little maggot peeping out of each hole and you’ll get the picture.

lotus-seed-pod.jpgNow I’ve always had a healthy appetite but it was ruined yesterday. The image of the maggots kept flashing through my mind and each time it did, I felt my scalp prick and goose pimples popping up my arms.

This morning, I woke up with one thought foremost in my mind. I will ask a doctor friend if this larvae infestation thing in the breast is possible. I had the uneasy feeling that the photo had been doctored.

So I was elated when I opened my inbox to find an email refuting the larvae infestation story. It was from a Jocelyn who had also received the same message. She had checked it out on Snopes (now why didn’t I think of that) and confirmed that the picture had been digitally manipulated. Don’t click on the above link if you’re the queasy sort like me. The gross picture is there. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

No known medical condition causes a result like the one depicted here, and the breast tissue around the supposed “larvae infestation” (larvae of what?) is too healthy (no redness, inflammation, or necrosis) to be believable. This image appears to be the product of the melding of a photograph of a woman’s breast and a picture of something similar to a lotus seed pod.

Yeah, I was right! The image was inspired by a lotus seed pod. Jocelyn wrote :

This is a fake pic, as far as i know, larva and maggots only eat DEAD tissue or corpse, only ring warms will attach on skins. Ring worms is from Africa even though you wash the clothing, it might still alive, that’s why they have to iron the clothes to make sure the ring worms will be fully killed.

Eureka!

But the image has been branded into my brain. It pops up unannounced at the most inappropriate time, like when I’m about to eat. Sigh, I think I will take a leaf from Wally Lamb’s heroine in his novel She’s Come Undone. Dolores who was as fat as a whale lost weight by imagining mould growing on her food. Her visualization was vivid enough to ruin her appetite so successfully that she shed the extra kilos in no time.

No need to go for those slimming courses. Just imagine maggots wriggling their heads with a “Hi, it’s yucky us. Now dump that yucky chocolate cake before it makes you fat.”

  1. Lydia, this is a well known Urban Legend

  2. Ok… goodbye, my dear food…. :p

  3. eeeeyuck!

always assume urban legend! i check stories out on snopes all the time

although …. it would make a good starting point for a piece of fiction!

btw i have seen maggots merrily munching on lepers stumps in africa … and the creatures do the host a favour, removing decayed tissue.

  4. I had the same email sent to me by a a friend Malaysia and told her instantly that it is not true. Technology these days does deceive people.
I have seen documentaries whereby maggots (clean) are being bred and used to heal big opened wounds in patients. Now that is true but perhaps some medical person out there might want to correct me.

  5. Msianmedicine, haha, it’s not so well known that I’ve heard of it.

    EW, I did warn you, didn’t I?

Sharon, Snopes it is from now on. That’s it with writers, isn’t it, always thinking of how to use anecdotes in their writing. Maggots may be a leper’s best friend, but not mine, eewww.

Judy, good on you. Yes, I have seen those documentaries too. Quite disgusting but if they’re doing some good, have to tolerate the yuckiness factorlah.

  6. Ewwww…..I think the best person to ask is our Doctor Lynette laa.

  7. Yvonne, now why didn’t I think of her? She’ll surely be able to stomach the awful picture.

  8. Yuck yuck yuck yUCK!! I was just getting over my geli geleman feeling of shaking my salt shaker over the snails eating up my strawberries. And now this!

  9. I know that you should wash new clothes and undergarments to get rid of the dyes and chemicals used for treating the cloth (which may cause allergic reactions to some people) but to get rid of larvae?????? Glad it’s just a stupid prank (although I did get goosebumps looking at the breast picture (heheh, can’t resist taking a look).

  10. Ailin, I’m having the shakes again when you describe your de-snailing.

Queen, Exactly! Hehe, I knew some of you wouldn’t be able to resist taking a peek.

  11. Oh…..My………….GOODNESS!!! I didn’t check the link out, for your info, cause suffice to say, I am one of those quesy ones. But hearing your description is more than enough!!! What with holes with maggots PEEPING out of every one of them. Yikes!

  12. Marsha, wise decision! The pix will keep replaying in your mind over and over and over again…

  13. I saw this video clip where this lady returned from her vacation and found a maggot living (should I say) in her head? It is not exactly on the scalp. The video showing how the maggot was removed in the end also pictured the so-called hole in her head. Any how, it is not as gross as the one you posted. Eww…

  14. lilacreveries, there’s a video clip on the snopes website but I dared not click on it to see it!

  15. i normally use my brain to brainwash myself to run and finish a 42.195km marathon which is on this sunday in PENANG.

  16. Jimmy boleh!

Naomi, sorry I have to delete your comment as there are four-letter words which I can’t have on this blog but I will reproduce part of what you’ve written. I’m also apalled that there are *sick* people who’d doctor such images for a joke.

i cant believe that the image is fake, i cant believe someone can actually have the idea to create this revolting image. especially with breast cancer, imagine how women would feel. this is just sick, im so angry at the person or people that did this.
i cant believe with everything going on in the world things like this are created, with everythings already so bad, you just want to poke and prod at it.
have you know heart? this is just inhumane.
it is just wrong. what if something like this was created on a guy’s penis?
with worms, and flesh dropping off? how would that make you feel?

  17. just traveling through.

  18. the article can make dizzy even vomit if i were here alone….it’s a very shocking thing that people can do to make people afraid of breast…even for some moment i feel afraid to imagine breast…but i can feel bettter after read the clarification…who make the manipulated news must be crazy!JUST GO TO HELL!!!
thank you for the exaplanation of the Reality!GOODBLESS U!!!

  19. I too was sent this email, and it has made me very sick for several weeks now. It is such an invasion of the mind that the person who originated it should be prosecuted and imprisoned. It has done severe mental damage to me and I still (weeks later) cannot get the thought out of my head. I have tried to desensitize myself by looking at lotus seed pods and trying to retrain my brain, but so far it hasn’t worked. My only saving grace is that I also have done research on the Lotus flower and found that it is an amazing creation of God. Lotus flowers are amazing and have strong symbolic ties to many Asian religions especially throughout India. The lotus flower starts as the seeds of these scary looking pods fall and take root at the bottom of a pond in the mud and muck. It slowly grows up towards the waters surface continually moving towards the light. Once it comes to the surface of the water the lotus flower begins to blossom and turn into a beautiful flower. I relate to this flower because I, too have risen from a muddy, mucky past and have moved toward the light and become a beautiful person. I hope this helps some of you who have been victims of this cruel hoax.

  20. A P.S. Note: The things that appear to be “maggots” in the photo are NOT. They are the seeds of the pod. If you need to see a photo of the actual pod with seeds, please go to: http://flickr.com/photos/flutterbye856/215367826/in/set-72157594328399238/

  21. Just saw the image on Snopes this week and I am so glad to hear so manyof you are grossed out over it and cannot get it out of yur heads! I just want to go get some sticky tape, place it on theimage, remove the “maggots” (seeds) and put antibiotic all over the “wound” and hope it will heal from the inside out. I guess if I picture that enoiughm, I will get it out of my head. Even though I know it is fake, you can see how it has creeped me out!!

  22. OH SHIT, oh my god. I’m so glad that is fake. I looked at the pic before I read on, and when I still thought it was real, I came as close as I ever have to actually puking from a pic on the Internet. (And I’ve seen that one of the cab driver’s exploded head on somethingaweful.)

People are getting too good at Photoshop. I think you should need a license to use that program. D: D: D: D:

  23. Really, if that was your breast, would you actually stop to have someone photgraph it with larvae peeping out so your picture could be posted all over the internet? Wouldn’t you be ripping these things out and smashing them into the ground like caterpillars?
    C’mon, stop being so gullible!

  25. goose bumps just popped out all over my arms neck legs..

    gosh….. so GROSS!!

i will never never NEVER eat lotus seed from the lotus seed pod EVER AGAIN!

yuck yuck yuck eww eww eww!!

  26. i’m so glad every one else was so grossed out as i was, although i know its fake it has left a very disturbing image in my brain which i just can’t shake, yesterday when i first got this mail, it sent me in to some kind of mental shock, i coulndt stop thinking about it and it made me cry! (8 weeks pregnant tho) but still their are some sick people out there:-(

  27. Okkkkaaayyy…

Maybe its just because I learnt art but that did not look realistic nor it was gross. Oh and I was eating while I saw it and still eating as I type this.
I thought it was gonna be alot more terrifying by many other people descriptions…but I got dissapointed.

  28. Lucy, don’t worry, you’ll get over it. Take care.

Emerald, I guess your expectation was too high then, haha. If the warning hadn’t been there, you might’ve got a bit grossed out?

  29. Hmm, yeah I guess so but also because it kinda still looks digitized like in older video games from the late 90s to the early 2000s.

  30. Hi Lydia, I just got this email a few days ago, and same reaction! Couldn’t get the pic outta my head (not exactly grossed out but it sure was weirdly yucky), checked it out on snopes, followed the video link of the extraction of larvae from the woman’s breast, and now i keep compulsively researching everything about furuncular myiasis (actual medical condition, how bout that!). I’m a life sciences undergraduate, don’t mind me.

Came across your page while googling, and it sure was surprising to read a familiar name’s similar comments on that pic! I often read your articles the The Star back in malaysia (now in canada studying).

    Cheers and thanks for writing!

  31. Hi Jeanne, nice to hear from you. I wrote this post more than two years ago, and you just got the email a few days ago. Shows how hard it is for this type of hoax to die off. It’s good to have Snopes to uncover all the nonsense.

You can read my articles online too. Keep reading.

  32. ohmg, i just saw this pi yesterday and it still haunts me. I am really falling apart about, i am crying right now. I have seen some really disturbing things, but this is the only one to stay with me and haunt me so. I know its fake and I have seen lotus pods and whatnot but I just cant shake the image from my head. Oh im crying again, its just so gross :( will it ever go away?

  33. oh please somebody say it goes away!!!!!!!
what to do what to do?!!!
this is an evil pic, evil work and i DONT call it creative: EVIL!!!!
