Taiwanese Dramas

My mother watches Taiwanese soaps on Astro, one of her favourite being Yi Nan Wang. It’s a long running soap, stretching to hundreds of episodes. Occasionally, I’d sit with her and watch snippets of it. There is very little drama in what I’ve seen : it’s conversation, conversation and more conversation.

Once when I was visiting my mother-in-law, another Taiwanese soap, Taiwan Ah Seng was on air. I asked her if she followed the series and she said, “Taiwanese shows are quite boring. There are lots of talking and if you don’t follow the series, you won’t know what’s happening.”

It’s yakkety-yakkety-yak. Now if only the Taiwanese lawmakers would take a leaf from their movie makers, things like this won’t happen :taiwan-parliament.jpg

FIGHT CLUB: Taiwan legislators fight due to a disagreement over a bill in parliament in Taipei. The brawl is by no means the island’s first, with legislators throwing stones and lunchboxes in previous sessions after failing to see eye to eye. (Reuters) Nicked from here.

Looks like Taiwanese Parliament is more exciting than their drama serials. In comparison, our Malaysian Parliament appears tame. Our august MPs only call each other names like monkey and bodoh, thump their hands on the tables, boo loudly at one another or nod off during proceedings; they never ever resort to violence like the Taiwanese legislators.

But even as I write this, I recall one MCA meeting where members threw chairs at each other. That is truly a blot in history, a shameful blot.

If fists have to fly, let them fly in the movies.

  1. ahh the Taiwan Ah Seng. Tried watching when I went back, but didn’t last 5 minutes. You are so right, their parliament is more exciting anytime.

  2. my mum also watches those taiwanese dramas, the one where they speak hokkien one. I also can’t stand those..too lengthy and too drama. Hahah..but i do watch those ermm..’idol drama’. especially when my fav leng chais are around. heheh…;o)

  3. My mum-in-law loves the 4pm Taiwanese hokkien shows on NTV7. I think most of the plots are predictable; dramatic sob stories that drag on and on…until my three-year-old wakes up from her afternoon nap and puts an end to all that sound and fury. With remote controller in hand, Zap! she switches to her favourite Astro cartoon channel.

  4. If the malaysian parliament had the same action as the taiwanese one wouldn’t it be more fun? Ha ha!

  5. cc, the Taiwanese soaps bore me to tears. But I remember watching a sob-sob story, Xueh Ger, that really moved me to tears.

spiffy, it’s interesting to listen to their Hokkien, they are more ‘chun’ than Malaysian Hokkien.

    k.kim, one person’s meat, another person’s poison :)

TH, haha, then it’ll be like the circus!

  6. Me mum followed a Taiwanese drama serial too…and when she missed a couple of episodes because she went away for a holiday, she commissioned me to scour the deep dark bowels of Petaling Street’s notorious pirated VCD/DVD shops for the series. After a couple of weeks of scouring high and low at Kota Raya, Central Market and Petaling Street…ah, I found it! Boy, she’s more delighted to see the series than hugging me in appreciation! :D

If you want to know, the series is about these five siblings who were all taken away to live wityh relatives and other people because of poverty and their mother’s sickness. The whole series, about 100 episodes altogether, follow the hardships of these kids trying to maintain contact with one another and also their mom. The finale of the series shows these kids growing up into adulthood reuniting before their mom’s grave. Touchy stuff. No surprise mom cried.

  7. blog-hopping. my mum watches yi nan wang religiously too! LOL! I remember her watching it since march last year all the way until now… and I watch snippets too here and there, and it DOES have some drama =) it stretches to the second generation now and i had fun catching up these few weeks during my term break. like it’s always on climax.. the drama =)

  8. Seriously, one of the tell-tale signs of getting old is this: You start loving Taiwanese Movies..

P/S: Is it hard being an author in M’sia?

  9. EW, reminds me of the time when I was following Autumn in my heart and Jewel in the Palance, whenever I missed some episodes, would pop by the video rental shop. However, they’ve since stopped renting out single VCDs. Must rent the whole series. So nice of you to hunt them down for mum.

ling, haha, the drama comes sporadically, going by what I’ve caught on air.

Tiffany, are you my ex-neighbour??!! (I’m guessing you are by your blog roll – I recognize Kar Min’s name, hehe). If you are, please send my regards to your mum. Haven’t talked to her for quite some time. Being an author in Msia – not hard lah, it’s being a best-selling author that is hard :)

  10. Lydia,
yep…their hokkien is so much more ori than ours. hehe…ours rojak like mad, well, at least mine is. heheh…

    EW,

My mum loves the Yi Nan Wang series and she would stay up till 2pm to watch it.

  12. hello everyone…i am new here and it was nice (and fun) reading your comment.

Our family members love to watch the series. My mum and dad, sister stayed up to watch the daily re-run. I prefer Huan Chu Ge Ge which is funnier than Yi Nan Wang (full of hatred and revenge) =)

  13. spiffy, you’re right – our Hokkien has lots of Malay thrown in. The Taiwanese have a bit of difficulty understanding our Hokkien.

Ashley, thanks for coming by. Huan Chu Ge Ge – My kids and I loved that show. It was the series that catapulted Vicky Chao to fame I think. I wanted to name my 4th child after the character in the show, Xiao Yen, but later changed it to Su Yen.

  14. Ya, Spiffy…my mum adored that little boy and she even wondered in passing why I didn’t look like him when i was a kid! I just rolled my eyes and told her to just go adopt one from China. :p

Ooooohhh… I love Huan Chu Ge Ge too! Had to read the darn Malay sub though, my Mandarin is very spotchy.

Nowadays, I hardly watch Chinese serials anymore…what with Animax and E! on ASTRO.

  15. Hahahah….ur so bad la, EW..telling ur mum that. I do tell my mum to go to China at times too…but for other reasons. *wink* I’m sure that lil kid has grown up..probly not so cute anymore. Heheh…;o)

  16. well… i watched yi nan wang religiously u know… since it was aired in 2005 until now… n i’m not chinese… n 19 years old… huhu…. what’s more my whole family is crazy bout this series… every 6 pm we all will be right in front of tv… hehe… n i’m a fan of others hokkien series also… but not taiwan ah cheng coz a bit draggy la…

  23. my mummy also like to watch yi nan wang! i would occasionally sit down n watch with her, sometime i manage to survive during the whole show, sometime i would doze off.. hehe

but my mom like the show so much she even ask me to download the opening song into her mobile phone. haha

  24. If you’re in your forties or fifties then don’t miss Astro Hua Hee Dai 8:00 pm hokkien(+ some mandarin) series. They are of abslolute quality with good story line and superb acting not to forget beautiful actresses…

Previous series like Home Away From Home and now showing Sun Shines First Behind The Mountain is highly entertaining and full of moral values.

  25. Roland, thanks for the recommendation but I got no Astro la.

  26. I just started watching at 800s episodes. they say its 526 episode @ 1.30hr = 789 episodes. now its already 830s episodes and still no end in sight. how come?

  27. Jane, this show seems to stretch for eternity. Even the actors seem to live eternally. They never grow old one.

  28. can anyone tell me where to see taiwanese drama Yi Nan Wang the whole episode. thank you.

  29. Richard, sorry I can’t help you there. Perhaps you can buy the Dvd series from the shops?

  30. Can anyone tell me the chinese title for “Sun Shines First Behind The Mountain” series?

Could sb tell me where i can rent or buy VCD/DVD on this drama series in Klang Valley? I don’t mind buying/ renting the whole series. Thanks.
