One for the album: YB Ong Tee Keat (centre), Popular’s Lim Lee Ngoh (fourth from right) and The Star’s Iris Tan (third from right) posing with award winners (from left) Lim May-Zhee, Pauline Tay (who represented Adibah in first prize for fiction category), Kim Choong from MPH Distributors (who represented Adibah in the second prize for non-fiction category), Lydia Teh, Amir Muhammad and Kam Raslan. Another contest for you!

I won The Star-Popular Readers’ Choice contest! Officially Honk! If You’re Malaysian is the most popular non-fiction local book as voted by The Star readers. I’d like to dedicate this win to my readers and fellow Malaysians, especially to those who took the trouble to send in their votes.

Congratulations to all the winners. The top prize carries a cash award of RM1,000 and a plaque while the second and third place winners won RM300 each and a certificate of recognition.

Fiction

1. Adibah Amin’s This End of the Rainbow

2. Kam Raslan’s Confessions of an Old Boy

3. Lim May Zhee’s Sweetheart from Hell

Non-fiction

1. Lydia Teh’s Honk! If You’re Malaysian

2. Adibah Amin’s As I was Passing (Adibah scored a double win!)

3. Amir Muhammad’s Malaysian Politicians Say the Darndest Things

To thank my readers who have made this win possible, here’s a contest which anyone in Malaysia can enter by posting in the comment box below. Only one entry per person please. Winners will be selected by random draw.

1st prize : RM50 Popular book vouchers

2nd prize : RM30 Popular book vouchers

3rd prize : RM20 Popular book vouchers

I had wanted to organize this contest at the start of the Readers’ Choice Awards campaign but didn’t want to be accused of ‘bribing’ my readers. Now that the results are out and I’ve won the the top prize, I can do so with a clear conscience.

Closing date : Friday, 6 June 2008

P/S : If you’d like your friends to have a shot at winning this contest, please spread the word in your blogs. Thanks.

    Lydia,
Congratulations on winning the contest! Honk! If you’re Malaysian deserved to win!:)

I’m sorry I owe you a review on “Honk! If you’re Malaysian”. Too many things cramped on me during these few months. I’ll write it in a day or two in order to spread the words of this contest of yours. Anyway, you’re very kind to share your happiness with your readers!:)

Hey Lydia: Congrats woman on your win! I am sure this will spur more books and more readers too. Haven’t been here for ages but I still read Eh Poh Nim religiously in the papers and I still read about you in the papers. You worked hard for this and yes, you deserve the prize and the recognition. Have lots of fun with the prize money…. can belanja Klang bak kut teh ah? :-) By the way, your crowning glory is all supershiny (in the photo)… are you using some special shampoo or is there some secret ingredient in your shampoo that we don’t know about? Or you have a fabulous Tresemme hair stylist?

  15. sukie May 30, 2008 at 4:32 am #

    Dear Lydia,

I have been reading your articles and have both your books Honk! If you’re Malaysian and Life’s Like That. It’s definitely adds a humorous touch to Malaysians’ antics!! =)

  16. lydiateh May 30, 2008 at 10:56 am #

Nordic convert : yeah! I can’t believe I beat Adibah. I’m a fan of her some more.

Maya, Thanks. Haha, the pix is so small and you can see the shine! I rushed home from a Sunday School program in church, simply washed the hair (with Pantene), slapped on some mousse, dashed off for the event and got there in the nick of time. Next time you’re in Klang, let me know. Even without the RM1,000, I can belanja bah kut teh.

Sook Beng, Lee Su Kim is one of my favourite authors too!

    Thank you, all.

  17. picatho May 30, 2008 at 4:12 pm #

I’ve won several books from a contest offered by this blog. On top of that, an author’s autograph on the inner cover of ‘life’s like that’ – “Dear Robert, Congratulations on wining this book in my blog contest. Hope you like the book. Honk!” Now I’m hooking for a voucher!

  18. yiifoong May 30, 2008 at 8:35 pm #

OMG! I’m so sorry, but the comment did not appear so i clicked on the submit button several times. Can you delete the other 3 of them please? I look like a complete idiot with so many similar comments.

  20. lydiateh May 31, 2008 at 7:07 pm #

michy, oops sorry, I’ve accidentally deleted them all! But don’t worry, I’ve read your earlier comment :) Maybe we just might bump into each other in Klang.

  21. koky33 May 31, 2008 at 9:56 pm #

    Congrats Lydia!!! :)

  22. michy May 31, 2008 at 10:01 pm #

Does that mean I’ll lose the chance of being randomly picked? :P

Yeah i hope so too. :)

  23. Wee Joe May 31, 2008 at 11:17 pm #

Will help to spread the news ….

  25. bubbles June 1, 2008 at 11:40 am #

  27. alice June 1, 2008 at 11:07 pm #

Congrats! Am very busy lately. Read about your success in The Star online. May you make it to international fame!

  28. Foong June 1, 2008 at 11:15 pm #

Congratulations on your win! You seem to be very good at winning contests, though this time it’s a contest that is not under your control since it’s the readers who determine the winners.

Now that you are offering your own contest, I want to be a part of it! But winners are selected by randow draw? Could not find any tips in winning such contest from your “Secrets Of Contests Winners Revealed” e-book I bought recently.

Perhaps you should have a slogan writing contest instead? But then again, to work my grey cells just for RM50 first prize may not be worth it!

Still, no regrets getting your e-book. Will use your tips to win those big prizes contests out there!

  29. lydiateh June 2, 2008 at 12:12 am #

michy, not to worry, I’ll definitely put your name in.

    koky33, anything new coming up?

Alice, thanks. Do keep on what you’re doing – you know what I mean.

Foong, lucky draw contests require no tip – it’s based on luck/probability. So the more you submit, the better your chances. But in this case, I want to even out the scores for everyone. Also, as you said, coining a slogan for RM50 may not be everyone’s idea of a worthwhile project.

  30. redruby June 2, 2008 at 10:21 am #

    Congratulations!!
Altho I’m still embarrassed that u read my entry on my ‘free read’ but still, I do feel honoured having you commenting my blog!!hehe..
I guess if I do get to win the vouchers, I can promise you I’ll buy myself a copy then (hope I’m not being TOO honest! *snicker!*).
Nways, good job. You inspired me and others too.

  31. Cherylina June 2, 2008 at 11:40 am #

    Congratulations, Lydia~!!
    Thanks for the comment too~!!
Oh I wish I get picked, book vouchers are like money dropping from heaven to me~
    Ever thought of writing fiction??

  32. Royalshoppingarcade June 2, 2008 at 12:22 pm #

The first thing that struck my mind after reading about your win in the Sunday Star was ‘wow!Lydia looks soo good!’Love your hair.Bukan nak bodek ok, just the first thing that I thought of. The idea of doing another contest is incredible.
I would be overjoyed if I get picked.
It is like a dream come true.

  39. mrshbt June 4, 2008 at 11:28 am #

Looking forward to seeing your books in the US book store like Barnes and Nobles or Borders in the near future.

  40. lydiateh June 4, 2008 at 11:34 am #

mrshbt, that’s a dream for the future!

lydia, the Popular vouchers can only be used in Malaysia, so it’s no use to you if you’re elsewhere. If I pick yours or mrshbt’s name, could you provide a Malaysian address and recipient for the vouchers?

  41. Elaine June 4, 2008 at 2:03 pm #

wow!! congratulations aunty lydia! happy for you! looking forward to your next book~

  42. Celine June 5, 2008 at 7:40 am #

Hi Lydia..I commend you for producing such a wonderful book! I first picked up Honk! If you’re Malaysian to have an easy read on board an 8-hour flight. I was deeply engrossed in it before the plane even took off! Your writing is extremely engaging, easy to read, interesting and most true in its recount of events (I found myself giggling and nodding in agreement at the things we Malaysians do). I can’t thank you enough for this book, especially as it has finally provided me an answer to my friends’ questions of ‘What is the true Malaysian culture like?’, to which I now reply ‘Read Honk! If you’re Malaysian’ and I can honestly tell you that there hasn’t been any of them that didn’t get through to the end of the book. Truly engaging! Well done, Lydia! Keep writing…

  43. Lycia June 5, 2008 at 2:53 pm #

Congrats Lydia! I’m so happy that you’d won. What is your next step?
