Another contest for you!
I won The Star-Popular Readers’ Choice contest! Officially Honk! If You’re Malaysian is the most popular non-fiction local book as voted by The Star readers. I’d like to dedicate this win to my readers and fellow Malaysians, especially to those who took the trouble to send in their votes.
Congratulations to all the winners. The top prize carries a cash award of RM1,000 and a plaque while the second and third place winners won RM300 each and a certificate of recognition.
Fiction
1. Adibah Amin’s This End of the Rainbow
2. Kam Raslan’s Confessions of an Old Boy
3. Lim May Zhee’s Sweetheart from Hell
Non-fiction
1. Lydia Teh’s Honk! If You’re Malaysian
2. Adibah Amin’s As I was Passing (Adibah scored a double win!)
3. Amir Muhammad’s Malaysian Politicians Say the Darndest Things
To thank my readers who have made this win possible, here’s a contest which anyone in Malaysia can enter by posting in the comment box below. Only one entry per person please. Winners will be selected by random draw.
1st prize : RM50 Popular book vouchers
2nd prize : RM30 Popular book vouchers
3rd prize : RM20 Popular book vouchers
I had wanted to organize this contest at the start of the Readers’ Choice Awards campaign but didn’t want to be accused of ‘bribing’ my readers. Now that the results are out and I’ve won the the top prize, I can do so with a clear conscience.
Closing date : Friday, 6 June 2008
P/S : If you’d like your friends to have a shot at winning this contest, please spread the word in your blogs. Thanks.

congratulations on your win! what will you do with the cash prize?

I’m sorry I owe you a review on “Honk! If you’re Malaysian”. Too many things cramped on me during these few months. I’ll write it in a day or two in order to spread the words of this contest of yours. Anyway, you’re very kind to share your happiness with your readers!:)

Hey Lydia: Congrats woman on your win! I am sure this will spur more books and more readers too. Haven’t been here for ages but I still read Eh Poh Nim religiously in the papers and I still read about you in the papers. You worked hard for this and yes, you deserve the prize and the recognition. Have lots of fun with the prize money…. can belanja Klang bak kut teh ah?
By the way, your crowning glory is all supershiny (in the photo)… are you using some special shampoo or is there some secret ingredient in your shampoo that we don’t know about? Or you have a fabulous Tresemme hair stylist?

Nordic convert : yeah! I can’t believe I beat Adibah. I’m a fan of her some more.
Maya, Thanks. Haha, the pix is so small and you can see the shine! I rushed home from a Sunday School program in church, simply washed the hair (with Pantene), slapped on some mousse, dashed off for the event and got there in the nick of time. Next time you’re in Klang, let me know. Even without the RM1,000, I can belanja bah kut teh.
Sook Beng, Lee Su Kim is one of my favourite authors too!
Thank you, all.

Congratulations on your win! You seem to be very good at winning contests, though this time it’s a contest that is not under your control since it’s the readers who determine the winners.
Now that you are offering your own contest, I want to be a part of it! But winners are selected by randow draw? Could not find any tips in winning such contest from your “Secrets Of Contests Winners Revealed” e-book I bought recently.
Perhaps you should have a slogan writing contest instead? But then again, to work my grey cells just for RM50 first prize may not be worth it!
Still, no regrets getting your e-book. Will use your tips to win those big prizes contests out there!
By: Foong on June 1, 2008
at 11:15 pm
michy, not to worry, I’ll definitely put your name in.
koky33, anything new coming up?
Alice, thanks. Do keep on what you’re doing – you know what I mean.
Foong, lucky draw contests require no tip – it’s based on luck/probability. So the more you submit, the better your chances. But in this case, I want to even out the scores for everyone. Also, as you said, coining a slogan for RM50 may not be everyone’s idea of a worthwhile project.

Hi Lydia..I commend you for producing such a wonderful book! I first picked up Honk! If you’re Malaysian to have an easy read on board an 8-hour flight. I was deeply engrossed in it before the plane even took off! Your writing is extremely engaging, easy to read, interesting and most true in its recount of events (I found myself giggling and nodding in agreement at the things we Malaysians do). I can’t thank you enough for this book, especially as it has finally provided me an answer to my friends’ questions of ‘What is the true Malaysian culture like?’, to which I now reply ‘Read Honk! If you’re Malaysian’ and I can honestly tell you that there hasn’t been any of them that didn’t get through to the end of the book. Truly engaging! Well done, Lydia! Keep writing…
