This bei
ng the seventh lunar month when ‘hungry ghosts’ roam the earth, our TV stations organise a fright fest as is their custom. Last week I saw I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. (Jennifer Love Hewitt was so young and thin then!) Last night I watched a Korean horror movie, Ghost Train. (I never watch horror movies at the cinema as I don’t believe in paying to get scared out of my wits.) Towards the end of the movie, one of the ghosts – a victim of a train crash – appeared in all its gory bloody countenance. She emerged from a pool of blood and crawled across the heroine who was lying prone on the floor. That was when it hit me.
Korean ghosts are like Japanese ghosts. They like to crawl. I saw a Japanese ghost crawling down the stairs like a blanched scorpion – if I’m not mistaken it was in the film Ju-On. That got me thinking about those Chinese vampire shows – they’re always sticking out their hands and jumping around comically. Reminds me of Energizer bunny, but instead of running around like that rabbit, Chinese vamps are hopping around. I’d like to suggest that the competitors of Energizer shoot an advertisement using a bunch of Chinese vampires. Of course the vampire which out-jumps the rest will be the vampire sporting the advertised battery.
Malay ghosts are flyers. They’re better than trapeze artists. For instance, the pontianak can fly from tree to tree. Of course flying isn’t restricted to Malays. This form of ‘transportation’ is also favoured by other races like the Chinese, English and others.
What about American ghosts? They walk about like normal folks. Sixth Sense comes to mind.
Korean and Japanese crawlers, Chinese jumpers, Malay flyers, American walkers… these are just based on the few horror films I’ve watched. Horror fans may disagree. Or they may have an even longer list to share. Thais, Filipinos, Indians etc. Speaking of Indians, it just struck me that I’ve never seen an Indian horror movie before. I do remember Shah Rukh Khan playing a ghost in a movie and if memory serves me right, it didn’t do too well at the box office. The Indian audience loves the standard Bollywood fare and ghosts just don’t cut it at all for them, even when played by King Khan. (Googled the movie. Paheli was more a love story than anything else.)

I’ve never been a fan of ghost movies. so i hardly watch them. the last i watched was The Eye part 1. that spooked me out totally… i did not even watch the much said, “6th sense”. hahah…
call me a scary cat… but i rather not watched than to stay awake the whole night. hehe…

i really miss those jumping ghosts! they don’t show them in the TV anymore…. i especially love the part where you have to hold your breath so they cannot sense you. and then the usage of mighty yellow paper to make them stop jumping…

I used to be such a huge fan of Asian horror. I have another thing to add. All ghosts like standing quietly behind you while you do a slow-mo head turn.

Grace, I’ve seen bits of The Eye on tv, quite spooky!
Jade, hahaha, yeah I forgot all about that. It’s funny seeing the vampires sniffing around the human who’s going blue in the face while holding his breath. And the yellow paper has awesome powers. Stick one on the forehead of the vampire and he will immediately freeze. Those vampire movies should be reclassified as comedies for today’s viewers.
Tarlia, hehe that’s right. Probably it’s no fun for ghosts to appear in front of their haunted. Or maybe they’re shy.

miss those days when vampire (the chinese version) movies were a craze.. they’re still the best… while movies like The Eye 2 are kinda… disappointing… not as scary as other Asian flicks like The Maid…

I never like to watch ghost stories. I was scared to death when watching all those black and white pontianak movies when small…
However, I do enjoy Happy Ghost.. they are on a different level of fun altogether.. toit toit… hehehe

I remember, we used to wait for chinese ghost movies, with PIECES OF YELLOW PAPER STRIPS! I don’t know the logic behind stopping those hopping corpses with pieces of yellow paper strips on the forehead, but we used to laugh ourselves silly trying to slap each others’s forehead with yellow paper.
BTW, the malay pochong-corpses hop too.

afshad, it’s funny how horror movies can transform into humourous ones, isn’t it.
Tom, I don’t think I’ll like The Maid – if I’m not mistaken I saw the trailer and it’s kind of gory.
cookiedonut, that’s why the hokkiens have a saying – cho hee siao, kua hee gong – literally meaning make movies mad, see movies stupid.
Ayah, Happy Ghost? Never heard of it. I only know of Casper.
Hi Ailin, serious?! You guys know how to have fun. Sounds like an interesting game, like catching. Those who kena the yellow paper must jump like chinese vampires.

loves to watch but scared.. lol
and i refuse to go to toilet at night and refuse to look at the stairs at night when i pass by it for a week after watched ju-on =.=

Elaine, it looks as though it’s better if you stay away from horror movies completely
Cue ghostly howl.
