    Hi Lydia,
Just finished reading Honk! If you’re Malaysian…good stuff as always! I’ve read your 2nd book before and i’m always peeping through the bookstore shelve, wondering when you’re going to write another book. And, last month while me and my wife wondering around in MPH at Penang Gurney Plaza, [she's in histerical book lover mood in the bookstore as always, dashing trough each shelves and said " Can i have this? That? This one? How about this?". Hey! What the heck! Take it. I can used the spending receipt to deduct my tax, anyway]. Then suddenly i spot the Honk! Wow, this must be my lucky day.
So, finally i manage to read your book today in peaceful after a long month of work and lots of activities. It was superb, fabulous and wonderful. It was a book which represent us, the Malaysian….not about Malay, Chinese, Indian, Singh etc
Keep writing and enjoy your life!

  10. lydiateh February 4, 2007 at 4:08 pm #

Hi ku Azhar, you’re a rarity among Malaysians, telling the missus to buy whatever she likes to read. Syabas! And thanks for your compliment, I’m glad you like my books.

    Meet me at Methodist church.

  15. lydiateh March 31, 2007 at 11:38 am #

Dear Emily, thank you for commenting here. Some of my church members are about your age and they like my books too. One of them used to rear a hamster but it became too much trouble and she gave it away. My younger kids have pestered me about rearing hamsters but I’m afraid they will not be able to take the responsibility and mummy will end up doing all the ‘dirty work’ for them, haha. How do I visit you at Skype? I’m not so tech-savvy, you have to teach me.

About my first book, it’s Congratulations! You have won! It’s very different from Life’s like that and Honk! It’s a guidebook giving tips to people who like to enter contests.

  16. Emily Soh (aged 11) March 31, 2007 at 8:27 pm #

Thanks auntie Lydia 4 the reply, go to http://www.skype.com, download Skype chat, then open an account, search for my account: hamsterlover1996**. add me! have a good chat! You can also add my dad to your list: Kenneth Soh. Your books are super super great. Some of my frens in Sunday School have got your books!

  18. Jane Yeo April 4, 2007 at 11:15 pm #

Hi Lydia, Just finished reading your latest book in about 14 hrs. heee My boss passed the bk to me. Some of the things u described apply to me haaaa, like the can opener, make up during traffic jam etc. I will be sending the copy to my daughter in NZ. I know she will roar aloud till her sides split. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get your 2 previous books. See, I live in U. K with orang utans for companions . Keep up the good work! Cheers

  19. lydiateh April 5, 2007 at 12:16 pm #

Jane, thank you! You’re the first one to comment on the can-opener article. Up to now, I’m still struggling with this gadget, haha. Life’s Like That is available on Amazon. Do you really live in UK with orang utans? Is Tarzan hanging out there too?

  20. lydiateh April 5, 2007 at 12:18 pm #

Emily, I checked out skype. Aiyo, must download the program some more. Do you mind if we ‘chat’ via email instead or through this blog? My email address is tehlydia@yahoo.com.

  21. Jane Yeo April 5, 2007 at 3:23 pm #

Wa liao u sure reply fast. I live in Ulu Kuching lah haa.haa 100% Malaysian! If I’m not mistaken, you can get a very good, reliable stainless steel can opener from Ikea. A fren got me one and has lasted me 5 yrs strong and still v. mighty. Perhaps u can go check it out & cheap too, under RM10/-

  22. lydiateh April 5, 2007 at 11:44 pm #

Hi Aina, the best way to improve English is to read, read and read. It’s fun too, but don’t expect results overnight. You have to keep at it. How would you like me to help you?

hey ms Lydia, yesterday i bought your book and i’m loving it!!! i readyour book last night. this book really make me smile while my friends giving some presentation in lecture room!!!

  51. Lydia Teh September 7, 2007 at 3:20 pm #

Hi Una, good to know that Honk! has made you smile. Thanks.

  52. cynthia September 18, 2007 at 3:13 pm #

Hey! I just got my hands on the honk! and i couldnt put it down until i finished it. I started reading it yesterday at 9.30pm and finished at 2am (yes i know i read slow) but i could not help myself but laugh at the mischief that kids get into and the power of parenting.

The chapters which i really love are “deep frying fish” and “mobile gap”. It is true that parents do not mind holding a big phone with rubber band tied around it to keep it in one piece. For a teen to be holding something like that, they will have to hide underneath the table and pray no one calls them as their friends tend to mock them. As for fish frying, my hands has so much spots on it i can change myself to cheetah woman without tattooing myself.

Btw, i am only 18 years old. And i speak like a am 40. Anyway, good luck in writing as i am looking forward to your next book. Cheers

  53. lydiateh September 20, 2007 at 10:17 am #

Hi Cynthia, thanks for recommending Honk! in your blog. Appreciate it. My teens are still hankering to upgrade their phone. They do it every year (the hankering, not upgrading – you think your father is a millionaire ah, I ask them each time). I’m surprised that you like the ‘deep frying fish’ chapter. Usually young girls (like my daughter) like The Savvy Shopper. Haha, to each her own.

  54. cynthia September 21, 2007 at 3:09 pm #

hi! Well, it is because i always do housework in my house and once my boyfriend had a taste on deep frying he was amazed how we girls can stand the pain of popping oils.

As for the savvy shopper, eh….i was not one, i got embaressed when i ask for samples, but now i am equiped with TAR and i am ready to shop for free XDXD however, this apply most on girls who dont eat much, guys will have difficulties in doing this.

  55. koncil October 15, 2007 at 11:43 am #

    hi lydia,
great job on the book. I spent both the nights of 1st and 2nd of raya to finish off reading. Your funny style of writing was a major boost after those long hours entertaining the guests. haha.

At this point, could imagine what you would write having spent the raya at my house :D .

    selamat hari raya

  56. lydiateh October 15, 2007 at 11:53 am #

koncil, thank you for your comment. I’m glad Honk! was a salve for your tiredness after a long day of entertaining. What a hectic raya celebration you must’ve had. There’s a contest here :

    http://lydiateh.wordpress.com/2007/09/28/10k-contest/

Why don’t you put in an entry, who knows you might get lucky. Selamat Hari Raya.

  58. lydiateh October 31, 2007 at 1:14 pm #

Hi Hasina, Honk! is not a novel :) Ideas you can use, but copying the text wholesale, that is considered plagiarism unless you attribute it.

  63. Emily Soh November 14, 2007 at 8:51 pm #

HighLow Aunty Lydia, its been a long time i haven’t leave a comment. Exciting to have a great author to reply to me each time i leave one comment. my mom says Life’s Like That is more suitable for me to understand what it is to be a “ah sou”, cuz all the things you write in LLT is about your life, and you have the same life almost every “ah sou” is living now including my mom here, hee hee, some of them make me laugh so much, dulu i bring it to school without my mom’s permission i know its wrong so my frenz ask me to translate it in chinese so hard lar…cuz i’m not so good in chinese even i’m studying in chinese school, hai yar, anyway they laughed about the one you wrote about you taking your baby n son on a “Shopping Spree” to the tamat line which is the toilet. whooiyo, that one sounded like a Toilet-Race haha, whereas Honk! is more about Malaysian Life which i don’t really understand SOME parts of it, ya i do understand SOME Funny ones oni which i like to catch. my mom experinced many things like what you’ve written. Funny eh, good entertainment to me cuz some make me laught till i stomach ache. Speaking of your Honk!, its been released a long time oledi, and LLT oso got a new cover now which i saw in the MPH catalouge book recently, K.. then when’s your next book? Will your next book be about Pets n Kids? Cuz i oso wish i would write one book like that, but cannot la nobody can look up on a kid. Next year I’ll be 12, next time can you reply in chinese to me ?oni if you know la.

From, one of the Malaysian ah sou’s daughter, Emily Soh

    Hi Gan Jiong reader

Thank you very much for your kind words but I don’t deserve such a high compliment la. A young friend of mine has reread my books many times, until the books look like ‘kiam chai’ (pickled veg).

I’m glad you are sleepy from reading my book till the wee hours, instead of lepaking at the mamak’s till 3.00 a.m. Your parents have to thank me for that.

  83. Nomis Oen April 6, 2008 at 3:50 pm #

Sai Men, if you bump into me in Klang, sure you cannot recognize me one. Sometimes I don’t bother to dress up, and look like pasar malam aunty with faded t-shirt and shorts and untidy hair.

  89. Simon Neo April 14, 2008 at 8:35 pm #

  92. lydiateh April 24, 2008 at 5:33 pm #

Hey Simon, books similar to mine i.e. humourous Malaysiana are Adibah Amin’s As I Was Passing, Glimpses and Lee Su Kim’s Malaysian Flavours. Su Kim was once a columnist with The Star. She also wrote A Nyonya in Texas. I enjoyed reading their books (but haven’t read Glimpses and Nyonya yet).

  93. Dreamer May 7, 2008 at 2:37 am #

Hi Lydia, have just finished reading the Bloging part in your recent book “Honk if you’re Malaysian” so I got the hint and drop by to see your blog, so much for Malaysian writers! I have to say that I am not much a Malaysian writer book reader but I got to know about your book while I was watching HOT one morning and I tot why not give it a change and I ran down to Mid Valley’s MPH to grab your book. I was cursing around the non fiction part of the book store and to my surprise nothing, tot it would be promptly displayed somewhere near the counter or so. At last I decided to ask the information counter and to my surprise he replied to me as such “All the way to the back and you will find all the Malaysian writers” ?? When I was at Borders in Singapore, I would say that they respected their local writers so much so as to display so promptly at counters and so on. Something to think about!!

  94. lydiateh May 7, 2008 at 5:51 pm #

Hi Dreamer, thanks for dropping by. Yeah, MPH MidValley’s local book section is way at the back but in Subang, I remember that this section is near the entrance. In Popular, best-selling books will get prominent display at the centre of the store, but the local books are also somewhere further in. Indeed it’s something to think about. I will forward your comment to the folks at Popular and MPH.

  95. lydiateh May 14, 2008 at 11:34 am #

Dreamer, I got this reply from MPH :

    Feedback from the outlet manager on placement of local books;

We had just shifted our Malaysiana recently to a new section. Actually our Malaysiana is now at a better location( near entrance 2 and book cafe) and of course will create more exposure for them (local authors).

  96. Xon May 22, 2008 at 10:08 pm #

  102. lydiateh June 6, 2008 at 5:50 pm #

HI Emily, yes I remember you. About mumcentre, they’re having some technical problems. That could be the reason for the pop up window. Anyway, my blog will be laid off for some time while they sort out the problems, so I won’t be posting for a while there.

Thank you for the invitation and detailed explanation but to tell you the truth, I’m scared to go to Friendster’s, etc. The last time I told you I was lazy, did I? I maybe giving lots of excuses, but truth is I’m scared because I’m afraid of becoming addicted to them. That’s why Facebook, myspace etc are all aliens to me, cos I just cannot afford the time to be sucked in as an addict! Blogging is already so time consuming. Hope you understand. We can communicate here or via email. Hope you don’t mind. Moreover, I do have to work on the next book and the next! Cheers, and happy birthday!!

hi lydia [should i add auntie there?]. i’m 15 but i really love your books. i’m a total book addict that my mom is hiding your book [because i love your books] from me so i won’t keep on rereading the it. [she's not doing a good job at hiding the books though, since i always found it.] i love the way you write and you really inspire me since i want to be a writer or a journalist. so keep up the good work!

  106. lydiateh August 12, 2008 at 5:25 pm #

Hi Najiha, thanks for your nice comment. I like being an inspiration to young people :) Don’t forget to study hard for your PMR (I so understand your mum cos I have teenagers too, and one of them is a voracious reader like you.)

Hi Sai.Men, my next book will be out next year – the eh poh nim book, not a malaysiana collection. Are you interested in eh poh nim?

cookiedonut, phew, at first I thought the stomach ache was brought on by indigestion… Thanks for the nice comment. I hope you like Life’s Like That too.

  110. Jo August 29, 2008 at 8:17 pm #

hi lydia, erm.. whats eh poh nim is all about? is it a name?

  112. lydiateh September 2, 2008 at 11:07 am #

Jo, eh poh nim book is a collection of articles about the use of figures of speech (eg idioms). You can find them in Star’s Mind our English page (eh poh nim is published once or twice a month).

arjuna, keep writing. Some bloggers are doing pretty well with earnings from ads displayed on their blogs.

  116. tarantula November 14, 2008 at 5:08 pm #

hi!! i’m a student from one of the public high institutions here…i gave the book to one of my malay friends…i want to tell them that not all english books are boring..the response was shocking!!!she kept laughing and she could not separate herself from the book..they have read your second book and they are asking when are you going to publish your third book…now i believe that they had some awareness to improve their english…thanks to you!!(^^)

  117. lydiateh November 17, 2008 at 10:58 am #

Hi Cynthia, sorry I just read your comment. I tried to reply at your site but can’t figure out how to do so. I’m glad you like both my books. The next book won’t be as funny as the emphasis is about learning English vocab. It’ll be out early 2009 – it’s a compilation of my Eh Poh Nim stories in The Star’s Mind our English section. The title is DO YOU WEAR SUSPENDERS? – The wordy tales of Eh Poh Nim.

Tarantula, thanks for sharing my book with your friends. It’s good to know they responded positively to it. About my next book (it’s the 4th actually) please see my reply to Cynthia. Look out for it.

  118. rizman December 14, 2008 at 10:57 pm #

    hi lydia,

I have two books of you. LLT and honks. Both really make me stomach ache especially Honks. Infact i gave Honks as a present to my NZ friend. And he really loves it as he only know a bit on Malaysia culture. And your writings really change the way i am today, instead of reading two books a year i manage to read or buy 3 to 4 books a month. And my wife keep on telling me as to keep all the receipt for the tax deductions later on. Thanks lydia. Keep up the good job and cant wait early 2009 for your 4th one. Selamat maju jaya.

  119. lydiateh December 18, 2008 at 6:37 pm #

Hi Rizman, what a lovely comment. Thank you for making my day brighter. Yes, do keep the receipts for tax relief. I’m so glad I’ve made a change in your reading habit. 3 or 4 books a month is very good indeed. Selamat membaca.

    hi lydia,

i love your honk! hehe i mean the honk book.. it’s very funny n i am really enjoying it…

    Good luck!!

  121. lydiateh December 20, 2008 at 11:39 pm #

Hi, syahrin. Thanks for dropping by. I’m glad you enjoy the humour in the book. Which chapter do you think is the funniest?

  122. Mimiejay January 14, 2009 at 10:54 am #

    Hello Lydia!

I really like the first few chapters of your book but i was starting to dooze off when i reached the end of book..

It’s not that your writing style boring but the later chapter is more to “Mom” issue rather than Malaysian issue. I find it a bit boring to read “Mom” issue since i receive constant nagging from my mum..ehehe

anyway, “of lemang, Yee Sang and Laddu” ..do you still have the article on how malay look chinese and vice versa? Star Online doesn’t have it..

    thanks for reading my comment

  123. Mimiejay January 14, 2009 at 10:56 am #

^ oh yeah.. i forgot.. should i call you auntie?

    i’m 18 btw..

  124. Lydia Teh January 14, 2009 at 4:02 pm #

Hi Mimiejay, thanks for your feedback. I do understand that some of the chapters are more suitable to people who’re older, like your mum. Though they may not be so relevant to you, but if you read them, you’ll understand the perspective of older people. If you feel sleepy, go wash your face with cold water, hehe.

Yes, of course I still have the chapter in my computer. Why do you ask?

  125. Mimiejay January 18, 2009 at 1:01 pm #

Not the chapter.. just the Star article.
    Interested to see that article..^^

Yeah, i did read them..after all i pay to read the whole book ma.. :P

  131. lydiateh April 11, 2009 at 10:21 pm #

Janice, there’s no sequel to Honk! yet. The stories in Life’s Like That are more personal but not as funny as Honk’s. You may like to check out Do You Wear Suspenders? The Wordy Tales of Eh Poh Nim, released in March.

    hey there, Lydia.

I’ve just bought two of your books: Life’s Like That and Honk! If You’re Malaysian. and i love your books sooo~~ much!

i saw your books the other day, but i didn’t have the money to buy it (i just spend 500++ for my uni books!). so, when my JPA went in, i rushed to KLCC to bought your books. and it’s a good investment, i’d say.

i really hope you’ll release another book like this. somehow, your book reminds me of Candace Bushnell’s Sex and the City style, well, yes of course minus all the dirty sex. keep on writing, me and thousands more fans of yours will support you.

long live Lydia~~ (ups…a bit too much there.)

  136. kuro-syamito July 16, 2009 at 10:18 pm #

p/s: i forgot to mention that my friends called me crazy for laughing so hard while reading your book. call me crazy or whatever, i still love your books. :)

  137. Lydia Teh July 18, 2009 at 4:55 pm #

Hi Kuro-syamito, thanks for your kind words. I’m always happy to hear positive comments from readers. I can definitely vouch that you’re not crazy for laughing out loud when reading my books :)

I got a copy of Honk! If you’re Malaysian now here in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. I like it & believe it I finished it in just 1 day! :) Now I’m looking forward to buy more writings from you.. Keep up the good work heheh!

  141. Lydia Teh September 23, 2009 at 6:17 pm #

Kairel, thanks for your comment. I’m glad you like Honk! so much you finished it in a day. You may want to read Life’s Like That – it came before Honk!

  142. Odd Potato November 21, 2009 at 12:21 am #

Hi Lydia,I love the way you phrased your sentence in Honk!,very humorous and witty, bravo!

Actually I read your previous book – Do You Wear Suspender in the bookstore before, very funny as well,I didn’t buy it though,as I’m short of money at that time(sorry! x__x ).

And then I came to the same bookstore another time with some cash in my pocket and saw Honk! and eventually bought it (got attracted by the title, hehe)

I got to admit that reading your book is like eating potato chips, once you eat one,you want another, very addictive, haha!

I went to the bookstore again today to see if they got your previous workpieces – Life’s Like That:Scene From Malaysian Life and Do You Wear Suspender.Unfortunately, they don’t have any left…. ;(

    Anyway,keep it up!
I’m looking for your next book
    GAMBATEH! ;D

  143. lydiateh November 22, 2009 at 7:53 pm #

Hi Odd Potato, this is the first time someone likens reading my book to eating potato chips – it’s a nice analogy. Thank you for bringing a smile to my face.

Hope you can find my other books at the bookshop next time. If you could let the store manager know, he’ll order more of my books (I hope.)

  144. ary amhir November 25, 2009 at 1:12 am #

    hi lydia,
    I really like your book
you are so funny in spicy words :D
    can’t wait your next book

  145. Odd Potato November 26, 2009 at 3:57 pm #

I told one of the bookshop staff and she asked for my phone number so that they can contact me if the books arrive.
But I doubt they would order the books just because of one order from their customer.
I will try my luck tomorrow(holiday for my uni, yay!) in midvalley.
    Well,wish me luck,haha!

  146. Lydia Teh November 26, 2009 at 4:35 pm #

Ary and Odd Potato, getting comments like yours really help brighten up my day. Odd Potato, who knows there may be other customers who’d asked. MPH MidValley stocks quite a lot of my books, so I hope you’ll find it there.

Hi there would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re using? I’m looking to start my own blog soon
but I’m having a tough time deciding between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something unique.
P.S My apologies for getting off-topic but I had to ask!
